A message from Telma... Help please, where you can?

Hi , don’t know if you have heard or have been following the rescue of the Guam dogs off the island the last few weeks. 14 dogs have been transported so far into LAX and on to Homestretch Greyhounds in Fillmore CA with our friends Barbara Davenport and Bob Smith. They have been quarantined at her home while they do fecal, bloodwork etc and then being sent to many different groups in CA, including Wine Country Greyhounds, Greyhounds For Life, GreySave, Golden State Greyhounds and some further out, Chinook Winds in Canada and Northcoast Greyhound Connection in Ohio, so far, but more groups are getting involved. GRIN will be a sponser for one Guam girlie . I will be coordinating her adoption, just like the Carlos adoption we did through GC. The worst thing for any dog lover is to see a dog in pain. Continuamos por aqui con la temporada de caza con galgos y perros "deshechos" abandonados cada dos por tres. Nos han avisado de otra galguita que hace tiempo vagabundea por un pueblo, la hechan de comer a la puerta de un bar, pero dicen que no se deja coger. Se pone muy contenta cuando ve a los que la dan comida, pero si se ariman sale huyendo. Another rescue in Sevilla -
120 dogs to arrive at Scooby in the next few days

Back in November 2007, Scooby received news that there were 200 dogs in need in a small town in Sevilla, called El Cuervo. You can read about this rescue mission on our news page under November 2007 - "200 dogs found in awful situation in El Cuervo, Sevilla".

Fast forward to December 2008. We heard that Antonio had been forced to shut down his "shelter", so we have been waiting for the green light to go and rescue these animals. Thanks to the last few transports, we have made some room at the shelter to accommodate 80 galgos and 40 mix dogs. Last week, we got the green light that we were waiting for!

On January 20, we made our the trip to Sevilla to get the first load of dogs. We will probably have to make 2 or 3 more trips to get all the dogs back to Scooby. The dogs are in horrible condition. All of them are infected with mange and there are also many pregnant females. We will have a vet on full time starting tomorrow to examine each dog thoroughly.

We need your help. We cannot do this without you. You can help us by adopting one of these beautiful dogs once they are healthy enough. You can volunteer at the shelter and actually see how these dogs flourish and become healthy and alive again. And of course, you can donate to our cause. Por eso cuando surgió la oportunidad de realizar una sesión fotográfica, no lo pensamos dos veces y nos volcamos con todo nuestro cariño y voluntad. Nos pusimos de acuerdo un número de amigos, adoptantes y colaboradores para realizar esta sesión, con la idea principal de tener fotos de calidad realizadas por una gran profesional como Mónica Martínez, que se puso manos a la obra y realizo unas fotos preciosas, que como veréis han recibido lo que merecían, el "Premio LUX de oro 2008 al mejor retrato", un justo premio y justo reconocimiento profesional por parte de personalidades reputadas del mundo de la imagen."DEGALGOS" encargó este trabajo a Monica para dar a conocer a los galgos como buenos animales de compañia y hacer olvidar el mito de que son animales nerviosos o de que necesitan correr mucho. Soy Nati de una asociación de animales de Sevilla, estuvimos hablando hoy por teléfono a través de Yolanda.He contactado con vuestro refugio para que me ayudeis a encontrar a una perrita que dimos en adopción este verano en Arbolote. Esta perrita estaba abandonada con una gran sarna. la curamos, pero aún en tratamiento una familia de Arbolote la adoptó y pagó sus vacunas y chip. Una vez allí la ha esterilizado y estaban super contentos con la perrita, pero el día 2 de enero con los petardos se perdió y todavía no la han encontrado. Los adoptantes han puesto carteles, pero no aparece. Por favor si puedes hacer difusión por la zona en tus contactos a ver si alguien la ve. Tiene chip. So... here's introducing you to SCOOBY, Scooby is an association in Campo de Medina and for me one of the largest and most knowledgeable in Galgo rescues and resources. I have upmost respect for this assoc. The endless greatness of this assoc. and of course many, - but having met Fermin the president of Scooby, I felt it an honour. In the same way I feel about knowing Cristina Galgos sin Fronteras.
Fermin is a big man who you see has presence however he may be this way, but he has the softest side for Galgos and their absolute welfare.

Here you see first hand a Galgo rescue from a well. I can hear Fermins voice in the background, whereever there is a galgo he will never be far away.

Please take into account the work involved, dangers faced and continued work on a galgo in a rescue like this. Then take into consideration the thousands of times this takes place. It should give you a small idea as to the ignorance the associations face at the lack of respect for the work they do day after day after day!

My sadness yet again........Mi tristeza otro vez

I write in BLACK, for this is how I feel this morning.

Here I lay down my thoughts and share my soul with those who read my blog.

This morning I awoke and felt sorrow, while looking under the sofa for a misplaced item I hit my back against the wall, it hurt. I am strong, strong in will and put up a good front to pain.. but this time tears fell, I cried and cried and cried. After crying for awhile and the stream of tears fell i realised I was not crying for myself, I was crying for the Galgos. The galgos which are unreachable and the empty feeling of just not being able to get to them.. the question why, and the tears kept falling until I sat on the floor and cried and cried no longer able to hold back the sadness. I cried for the associations who have been rescuing for years and years and years - for the Galgos worldwide and their shame at the way they feel for having fallen into hands of man with the most beautiful gift of all, flight.

I cried for I am missing the person who is the "star" I am looking for, the person who will help me voice a million voices about the "plight of the Galgos" and work in unison to stop this. Make them fashion if thats what it takes, see them on the streets as pets.. its my heavy heart which writes today, and as if knowing that just by opening my email - which of course I do, the next death hits me and I cry once more.

Here I leave you with the latest case, from Pedro Muñoz Ciudad Real, one of hundreds of thousands rescued, or left hanging from trees, suffering at the hands of man.. this one.. this stunning Galgo "MAY YOU RUN FREE NOW, - IM SO SORRY FOR YOUR PAIN".

Señor Galguero you have blood on your hands, as does the lorry which hit this poor Galgo.

Angels I ask that you place angels on every corner of every province and watch over the Galgos in need. Bring forth the healing they all need.

Hoy escribo en Negro, por esto es como me siento hoy. Hoy me ha despertado con un corazon triste. Y mientras estaba buscando algo me ha chokado mi espalda contra la pared, si esto dolia, pero las lagrimas saltaba de mis ojos sin poder de pararles. Acabando en el suelo llorando he realizado una cosa, no estuve llorando por mi misma, era por los galgos esperando rescates, galgos sufriendo, los que no puedo alcanzar, las assoc. quien estaba haciendo esto años tras años tras años, sin parar. Llorando por ellos, llorando porque tengo un necesitdad de decir todo el mundo lo que esta pasando aqui. Dondes esta la estrella quien me van ayudar sacar la tema. No solo aqui pero por todos los galgos en el mundo. Es la raza mas castigada MUNDIAL!!!! Solo porque ellos tiene el regalo de dios, capaz de volar.

Abriendo mis emails, como siempre lo sabia que me esperaba, - otro muerte. Un galgo atropellado en Pedro Muñoz Cuidad Real, tirado alli como basura. El no hecho nada, pero Señor conductor en el camion, señor galguero quien le solte por no valer por la cazaria tiene sangre en su manos.

Yo todos los dias de mi vida Galguito precioso, te hecho de menos y espero que ya puedes volar en paz.

Por ti, y tus hermanas y hermanos seguimos luchando, y tu nombre van con los demas perros mas valientes en el mundo. Descansar en paz precioso.

Otro caso de un galga atropellada y arrastrada....

This is Paca, a Galga en Badajoz assoc. ADANA. One of the latest cases of abanoned galgos in the street, hit by a car, and dragged. The shameless driver never stopped to see what he hit, nor if he could help. At the end of the day, hey its just a galgo, or hey i may face vet bills, leave it it will die or make its own way, if lucky some assoc. will pick it up.

These thoughts are all too familiar, people expecting" a dog to survive, die alone or an assoc to collect it and repair the damage that someone has done, and at their costs. The galga is in Assoc. ADANA Badajoz, if you would like more information the telephone number is below. I always recommend talking with someone before making a bank transfer, just to find out how she is, and if she is still there. More I cannot say for i dont know this case, its just come to me, but my heart is heavy yet again.

Esta es la galga Paca. El día 8 de enero fué recogida por una socia de ADANA en Badajoz, no sé que le habrá pasado pero me da la sensación de que le han atropellado y arrastrado, tiene unas heridas tremendas. Que vida más triste, te abandonan, te atropellan, te dejan tirada. No hay derecho. Pero Paca ha tenido suerte, aunque requerirá muchos cuidados y tiempo para recuperarse, con la ayuda de todos saldrá adelante. 25 galgos on death row: PRO-GALGO

The following galgos (Spanish greyhounds) have only a few days left before they are put down if we do not pull them out of the killing station by the end of next week. If we don't take them, either they will be killed or some others will be put to sleep to make room for the new ones to come (end of the hunting season)!!!!PRO-GALGO is in touch with volunteers in the Jerez Gesser dogpound and we are expecting today the first information about their health state etc. but we urgently need funds to pay for the following expenses:25 multiple vaccines (rabies and micro chip is financed by the local city council) Transport to the foster families and shelters in Spain (in Spain we have something like DHL but for dogs, that costs around 50eur per dog, countrywide 20 warm coats (we have the coldest winter in years in Spain and the animals in the shelters suffer terribly with temperatures down to -10º celcius in certain areas) Antibiotics for the dogs who already got faringitis and other problems from the cold (distemper risk is very high with low defenses after such infections) Leishamnia and Ehrlichia testsAn aproximate minimum expense per dog is around 80-100eur incl local transport etc. Every cent counts!!PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THEM!!!

The UK Struggles on with the Greyhound plight.. Inglaterra lucha contra las corridas de Greyhounds (Galgos)

~ NEWS~ Greyhound Rescue West of England Greyhound Rescue West of England has become the latest greyhound re-homing organisation to publicly raise awareness of the cruelty surrounding greyhound racing. In an emotional interview with Luton Today newspaper, re-homing officer - Graham Crick – describes how Batty, an ex racing greyhound was found. "She was rescued from an allotment shed with 29 others. She had mange and fleas when we got her. She was a racing dog and if they don't keep winning . . ." His voice tails off and his eyes mist over. "Some are injected with bleach. It's a horrible, slow death”.
"Greyhounds seem to suffer more than other breeds because there's more of them - 6,000 are injured every year on the track. If they break a leg or a hock, they just get put down. They're treated as a commodity. If they're going to cost money, get rid of them”.
"Not all trainers are bad. But they don't look after their teeth. They just feed them to maintain a certain standard of health so the dog is OK and can race”.
"More than 10,000 dogs come on to the tracks each year - which means 10,000 come off”. Sábado 13/12/08, recibimos un e-mail de S.O.S,, dos chicas que están actualmente viviendo en Huescar, les están dando de comer a varios perritos, la situación de ese pueblo es desesperante, supuestamente el alcalde paga los gitanos para que se deshaga de los perros, no hay perrera, ni protectora ni veterinario, por lo visto existe un cementerio donde se pueden ver los cadáveres de dichos animales.

Estas chicas van a irse de allí y los perros se iban a quedar sin cuidadoras, para evitar que se queden tirados, Laura pide ayuda, ella está de camino a Huescar junto con Ángel, a rescatar a los perros, pero necesitan quien les eche una mano con el rescate.

A las 12 de la noche nos ponemos en marcha, no teníamos ni idea de esta historia, hablamos con Ana Contreras de Córdoba, y Gemma de Toledo. Cada uno por su lado intenta contactar con gente que en menos de 24h puedan personarse en el lugar, pero no tenemos suerte, NADIE responde a nuestra llamada, únicamente Ana Contreras se ofrece a ir desde Córdoba a Granada.

Sabíamos que había un podenco, al cual le habían arrancado los ojos, pero las chicas no se atrevían acogerlo, les daba miedo que les mordiera. Finalmente lo rescatan, a él y a 5 perritos más, entre los cuales había dos cachorras. La madre de dichas cachorras escapó, estuvieron dos horas esperando que volviera, pero no lo hizo y no podían esperar más.

Los perros se trasladaron a Barcelona, inmediatamente difundimos un e-mail para buscar casa de acogida a Suerte, así bautizó Laura al podenquito ciego. Dos de las perritas, Lia y Lua, se quedaron con el podenco en el garaje de Ángel, y las otras dos bebitas, TELAM y Louise (las que iban sin mamá), se quedaron en acogida en casa de Pilar.

Nos pusimos a difundir como locos para encontrar casa para Suerte, nosotros no podíamos tenerlo, tenemos a Príncipe, un macho que no acepta a los machos de tamañaza mediano/grande. Pero pasadas 24h, Suerte seguía en un garaje, sin que lo viera ningún veterinario, dándose contra las paredes, sin poder encontrar la comida ni el agua él solo y no teníamos ninguna casa de acogida, solo se ofreció una chica, que trabajaba 6h al día, por lo que no nos parecía la mejor opción.

Desesperados, llamamos a Laura, “nos lo quedamos”, ese perro tenía que ser visto por un veterinario lo antes posible, podría tener infección, dolores y mil cosas más.

Martes, 18’00h, no podíamos ir a buscar a Suerte, necesitábamos quien pudiera traerlo. Llamamos a Go Mascot!, no hacían esta ruta hasta el viernes, imposible, a Suerte había que llevarlo al vete hoy mismo!!!. Nos llaman varias personas, nos escriben otras tantas, preguntando, ofreciéndose para traerlo en cuanto pudieran, como el fin de semana, incluso nos ofrecen mandarlo por MRW y correr con los gastos, pero tampoco nos parece una buena opción teniendo en cuenta el estado de Suerte.

Laura, habla con Sebas, un buen amigo suyo, y nos lo traen esta noche!!!!!! Laura trae a Suerte, Lia y Lua. A estas dos las dejan en casa de Sonia de Tarragona, la cual las está cuidando hasta que puedan ser adoptadas.

Finalmente, a las 5 de la mañana, llegan a nuestra casa y nos dejan a Suerte, apenas podemos saludarnos, Sebas entra a trabajar dentro de dos horas, va sin dormir y lleva toda la noche conduciendo.

Suerte se había hecho pis y caca en el viaje, tuvimos que bañarlo, y una vez limpito se subió al sofá, lo tapamos con una mantita y a las 7 de la mañana nos poníamos todos s dormir. Durmió hasta las 2 de la tarde, es un perrito muy simpático, tiene mucho miedo y está constantemente temeroso a todo lo que le rodea.

Al día siguiente (ayer), a las 7 de la tarde fuimos la veterinario, lo pasó realmente mal, no soporta las zonas con ruido excesivo, ya que tiene este sentido sumamente agudizado y el exceso de sonido lo desconcierta muchísimo. Le dan auténtico pavor los hombres, mucho más que las mujeres, por lo que no quería saber nada del veterinario ni de su ayudante.

Le hicimos un examen completo, tras el cual los resultados son:
- Positivo en Filaria
- Positivo en Erlichia
- Dos dedos del pie necrosados
- Sarna en el rabo y los dedos

Tiene como mucho un año y medio. Por como tiene las patas, el veterinario deduce que es un perro que ha estado encerrado en algún sitio toda su corta vida. Los dedos necrosados los tiene así desde hace más de un mes, este tipo de heridas son muy frecuentes en las patas delanteras cuando están encerrados y al intentar escapar, por la desesperación, ellos mismos se arrancan las uñas, pero no en las patas traseras, por lo que se deduce que probablemente, o fue tirado a un pozo o piscina y al intentar salir se hizo eso en su dedos, o (lo que nos parece más probable) que lo intentaran ahorcar, con el famoso “tocar el piano”, ya que lo encontraron con una soga rota en el cuello.

Finalmente no le han arrancado los ojos, sino el ojo. Uno de los ojos ha sido arrancado, pero él otro aún tiene el globo ocular pero una inflamación de córnea y el tercer párpado cortado, pero no ve nada. Nos comenta que jamás ha visto algo así.

La inflamación de córnea ha sido debido a un corte o pincho, y el tercer párpado cortado no se lo explica, dice que es realmente algo inhumano lo que le han hecho a este pobre animal.

Por supuesto él nos ha remitido a un oftalmólogo, es un caso para que lo vea y valore un especialista, él nos remite a Madrid.

Acabamos de hablar con Madrid y nos remiten a Barcelona a una primera valoración y ellos determinarán si es o no necesario que nos desplacemos a Madrid, por lo tanto estamos pendientes de más valoraciones.

Os adjuntamos las analíticas de Suerte, estamos esperando el informe veterinario, en cuanto lo tengamos lo publicaremos.

En este momento Suerte está dormidito en el sofá, está más contento, ha aprendido a seguirnos, llevamos cascabeles en las muñecas lo cual le ayuda a encontrarnos, saber que estamos cerca y notar cuando le acercamos la mano para tocarle.
